So Many Ways to Win

One of the best things about racing J-24's in this area is the variety of ways you can bring home a trophy. Between racing in Beverly on Thursday nights run by the Jubilee Yacht Club, the Saturday series run by MRA, the NOODs, the fleet series as well as various other regattas, there are so many ways to win.

MRA Racing on Saturdays

Marblehead Racing Association runs an extremely well organized Saturday Series on three seperate lines. Saturday racing features up to three races starting at noon on well laid out windward-leeward courses usually. There are daily prizes for first places, series prizes for each of three series, and overall season prizes. Registration and schedules are available on the MRA website.

Thursday Night Racing at the Jubilee Yacht Club

Thursday nights the Jubilee Yacht Club opens it's doors to any and all J-24 racers. The past several years have seen an average of 10 boats a night on the line. While evening racing in the middle of the summer can lead to unpredictable winds and some reach around race course occasionally, it is still always a great time. Racing starts around 6:30, and similar to the MRA series, the JYC offers prizes to the top three finishers each night, as well as series trophies for two separate 10 week series. Registration information and results can be found on the JYC Website. The Jubilee Yacht Club also invites everyone to try one free race without registering, so take your boat over to Beverly once before the season ends.

Marblehead NOOD

This is the premier local event of the summer for J-24 racing. This event is run over three days at the end of July and is sponsored by MRA and Sailing World. Information and registration can be found on the Sailing World website.

Fleet Championship Series

In addition to the MRA and Jubilee Series, J24 Fleet 28 sponsors a fleet championship series based on results at the following events throughout the summer. All you need to do is be a member in good standing with the fleet (have paid your annual dues), and you will be scored for this series.

Travel Regattas

In addition to local racing, each year for the past several years, more J-24s from Fleet 28 have started taking their boats on the road. Regattas commonly attended by local fleet members include:

Changing of the Colors Regatta at Lake George, NY -- This end of fall favorite is on Lake George after the tourists have gone home and the leaves are changing. This regatta is very well run, and features up to 50 boats and great lodging opportunities right next door.

J-24 East Coast Championships, Annapolis, MD -- This is one of the best run and most competitive J-24 regattas of the year. If there is one regatta to travel to this is it.

Newport Regatta, Newport, RI -- Sail Newport is home to this regatta. You can count on great winds, lots of races, a well run launch and haul out, and a low key but good party. And it is one of the easier drives. This makes a great warmup for the Marblehead NOODs.

Downeast Regatta, Portland, ME -- This regatta may not always have the best wind, but it is sailed in a beautiful harbor and features a real lobster bake for the whole crew on Saturday.

This is far from an exhaustive list, but rather highlights of regattas you can almost always count on seeing a Fleet 28 member at. In the past years fleet members have travelled to and done well in the J-24 Nationals and the Silver Anniversary regatta.
